Alvaro Parente, Michael Cooper score GT wins in Alabama

Racing alongside the Verizon IndyCar Series at Barber Motorsports Park (AL) over the weekend, Alvaro Parente and Michael Cooper each took GT victories in the Pirelli World Challenge’s Grand Prix of Birmingham doubleheader, while Martin Fuentes and Alec Udell swept the GTA and GT Cup races, respectively.

The first day of GT competition saw Cooper’s No. 8 Cadillac ATS-V.R sit on pole position, but it didn’t last long. Cooper raced alongside Parente as soon as the green flag flew, and the eventual winner had the top spot by the time the two made it out of the first turn. Parente then led all 31 laps of the race, collecting his second career victory in the series.

Just as Parente did the previous day, Cooper took the lead in the first turn after starting in second position. Cooper dominated on Sunday, leading all 36 laps and winning the race by nearly a second over Parente. Following the doubleheader, Johnny O’Connell continues to lead the GT championship standings over Cooper by 16 points.

In the GTA class, points leader Fuentes swept the weekend in his No. 07 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3. Fuentes led every lap in the Saturday race in Alabama, but Sunday wasn’t so easy for the driver — after Frankie Montecalvo led a majority of the race, a late mechanical problem allowed Fuentes to take the lead and eventually sweep the weekend.

The No. 17 Porsche 911 GT3 of Udell started on pole in GT Cup competition on Saturday, leading every lap and doing the same the next day. Despite his dominant performance during the weekend, Udell still trails Sloan Urry in the class points standings by 20 points.
